Have you tried one of these?

Mine is still working well after 9 years. Easy to move from home to home, it even works when we are in the caravan. Very multi purpose really. She never fails to let me know that there is someone at the door. She paws at my leg, when I've got my headphones on.

Siemens wireless, plays a "variety of tunes" and doesn't scare you half to death when a caller rings .

Don't get a wireless one. Ours would go off randomly in the middle of the night for no reason, with a different tune than we'd selected. Swapped it for a wired cheapo one from Argos about 10 years ago and it's still going on the same set of batteries.

Quite dreadful
If you don't trust that new-fangled electricity stuff, why not get a clockwork door bell?

I wired up ours in 1993.

Fully wired job, transformer, big bell and the only bit I have to replace or fix every decade or so is the bell push, the terminals rust up and so have to be scraped, which you can only do a couple of times

Wireless ones have a life of about a year
