On my first tour I took what I thought I needed. It nearly killed me and could easily have put me off cycle touring for good.

With the benefit of hindsight I would suggest you get together what you think you need and pack it onto your bike with the luggage you may have. Go for a ride.

If you struggle and are miserable you have too much! Then you need to decide what is important to you and what is not. We are all different. ^_^

Another vote here for (rear) panniers and a bar bag.

OK, I will, leave pillow at home, too bulky. Stuff all your clothes in your carrymat/ sleeping bag stuff sack
I used to do that but find a proper pillow makes a big difference to me, they squash down quite small a don't weigh much. But then I'm a middle aged bloke who likes his home comforts, 25 years ago I could sleep anywhere.

OP, where in West Yorks are you? I started out touring about 10 years ago and the Dales are great place for a trial, my first trip was setting out from home, near Shipley, and camping my first night in Settle. A trip around and another night in Malham before returning.

First time out I took:- Tent, sleeping bag, spare shorts, shirt & socks, spork, spare tube and a multitool. That was it! The very next day I bought a camping mat & a pvc ground sheet.......................................I don't think I've bought any other equipment since.
