Thanks everyone its coarse fishing I was thinking of doing and I didn't know about telescopic rods. By what you have all said it is feasible then.
Which is great because to get to some of the rivers down here you have to drive down narrow lanes and parking can be a nightmare so a bike would be a lot easier.
Mind you having read a few mags and been on YouTube its not going to be as easy as I thought as it seems so much more technical these days.

Yebbut, the fish haven't been studying modern fishing techniques. It's still possible to catch a fish with a worm on a hook.

I had loads of fun with a basic float fishing set-up, a pint of maggots and a catapult to wang some extra bait in the water...

Oh yes, happy days indeed. BUT, if you are a 'proper fisherman' nowadays, you need at least three of everything just in case, not forgetting several BIG bait boxes, the large brolly, bivvy bag, tarp, camping chair / bed, etc., etc., all in camo pattern.

By the time they've set that lot up, it's time to go home.

A bought a cheap telescopic rod in Canadian Tire, Vancouver a couple of years ago but it's never been used in anger. Can anybody suggest a compact, fixed spool spinning reel that I could use it with for some amateurish sea fishing? It doesn't have to be fancy. I very rarely catch fish but I enjoy the process of not doing so.

Like others i had many adventures as a kid with rods strapped to the top tube, a pair of wellies on my feet and a couple of buddies.
Youv'e got me thinking now though that i can't remember the last time i saw any youngsters fishing and certainly not on their own. Is this just another indicator of how lifes changed in the last 40 years along with the decline in Airfix planes and hornby trains, or do I simply go to the wrong places?

The local lads in Crewe seem to do okay cycling along with the rods held much like a jousting knight's lance. The early days of summer are always a little challenging on the bikepaths as a result.
