Cycling and pregnancy

I carried on riding my bike up to and beyond my due date with the second cub - got into bother with one of my colleagues every time she realised that I'd ridden out to site. S'only about 4 miles, and flat as a pancake! Mind, this was when I was not doing a lot of miles, utility cycing only, on my old (about 12 years old at the time!) Halfrauds gaspipe special that my dad gave me when he got it free on a BOGOF deal. Didn't ride to the hospital though - apart from anything else I was not prepared to ride home after giving birth, and how would I have got the bike back? Plus the cycle parking at YDH isn't brilliant, and is miles away from the maternity department.

V. useful, thanks - my wife's been worrying about how long she should carry on cycling (she's 18 weeks pregnant) so I'll show here these articles.

I think the general advice is as long as the Mum to be feels comfortable.... pregnancies differ and it may be that you can cycle through one, but not the other.

Of course a recumbent trike would be more comfy than an upright!

She was 8 centimetres dilated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a miracle she didn't swallow her bike!!! LMAO

I think the general opinion about pregnancy and exercising is, as long as you already exercise it's pretty much ok to carry on all the way through the pregnancy, but you're not supposed to take it up half way through because your body isn't used to it. That's what I heard.

Well in Bristol the option of cycling to hospital to have your baby or even for scans etc may be severely limited by where you live... they stuck the Maternity hospital at the top of one of the steepest hills in Bristol! Thinking about it ... its also not on a main bus route and stuck in the middle of the first Residents Parking Zones in the city which just started this week making it fairly hard to get there.

My mum cycled until about 8 months I think. She was a keen touring and racing cyclist so she had the incentive. Also, that was their only means of transport other than bus and bike in (the middle ages) LOL.
