I skipped the comments but it seems like the bulk of the stats were on how cyclists were killing off pedestrians....

what a strange/rubbishly written article - lacks focus and a point, except in using stats poorly to try and fuel the 'cyclist are the biggest menace' crap they come up with.

...but how much did cycling increase? I bet the increase in the numbers of cyclists was considerably more than the increase in injuries.

What a pathetically written article.

It starts on one subject then veers off onto other subjects. Where are the stats showing there are more cyclists, hence the number of injuries? What is a 'so-called KSI'? I can guess but I shouldn't have to.

Rubbish.

Well there are better versions of the same article elsewhere. The annuals showed a much smaller rise. Wait and see what annuals from another reference point say. Like everybody else I'm waiting for estimates of how much cycling has risen this year and most people I speak to apart from myself think there have been quite large rises.

I think we'd all make better journos then that tosh they come up with on DM.

Balanced reporting? Hell no. Bigoted agendas tick.
Trying to baffle people with a so called stats/science approach - pisses me right off-morons

The only positive article the DM had recently was the rather amusing article on the dark lord on a brompton.

If you get as far as the comments, you start to appreciate the type of person that takes the Daily Mail. It really should not be sold as a paper but as a comic.

Their stance on cycling is truly appalling. I've lost count of the number of e-mails and letters of complaint I've sent to them regarding it.

There was also a rise in motorcycle casualties, with those killed or seriously injured (KSI) rising 5 per cent in spring 2009 and slight injuries going up 2 per cent.

Agree

Can anyone shed any light on this bit:
Last month a damning report by Government watchdogs said anti-social cyclists were themselves a road safety menace on Britain's highways putting vulnerable pedestrian and other lives at risk - including their own.

What report is that then?

The only paper to support Oswold Mosely and Franco's lot before the war - say no more really.

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmselect/cmpubacc/665/665.pdf is probably the one they are referring to. The press reporting somehow picked up some quotes from the more eccentric members of the committee. A prime example of such a quote, from
Rt Hon David Curry MP (
Conservative, Skipton and Ripon):

Why are cyclists such irresponsible and arrogant road-users? The only time I have been knocked down in my life was by a cyclist going like a bat out of hell outside the House of Commons, dressed like Darth Vader, as they all do!

The press reporting sparked a thread here on the site, and someone added a helpful link to the report - now buried somewhere in the following massive thread: http://www.cyclechat.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=46588&highlight=bat+hell

I read the report - most of the committee members seemed perfectly sensible, as did the eloquent Mr Devereux.

Mr Curry was the exception. It seems that he fancied himself in the role of clown, village idiot, heckler or some combination of all three. The Daily Mail quoted Curry's more colourful statements here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1222067/The-Lycra-louts-MPs-curbs-cyclists-lives-risk.html
