Reminds me that I am not a cyclist, just someone who rides a bike.

Not for me.

Some interesting ideas there. Bike shops often already have café's, which Mapdec don't at present. The bar/hang-out space is there in some cases - there's Mamil in Brighouse near me - so they're looking to add that in.

The idea of a training space in what appears to be quite a big warehouse moves it from just being a shop and into somewhere where cyclists arrive, not necessarily by bike, spend time and hopefully money. Those two don't necessarily link together and the market they're aiming for is quite mid-top end.

My guess is the challenge is trying to make all that profitable. Their location puts them at the north edge of Kendal and that isn't as accessible as a central point, but is likely to be cheaper to operate. Having the space where bike fitters / sports therapists could base themselves works as long as it's financially viable for all.

I only got 17 seconds in, to the bit where he said "somewhere for cyclists to exist as a tribe".

I was so overwhelmed with revulsion I had to stop watching. Maybe the rest of it was great, but I couldn't get past that phrase.

To be fair I've watched other of his videos, with him wittering on about bottom brackets and stuff and they were ok.

That had me pressing 'stop' too. I'm not that kind of cyclist so the idea held limited appeal. I'll stop at a cafe/tabac and have a chat if that's what I want and there's one going but generally speaking I can't think of anything else I want from my ride.

It's got me to thinking about a bike shop in near-ish by town (50km away) It has a cafe area, nice comfy seats etc. I went in to look at electric bikes (a story for another day) Okay, I get it and I applaud the desire to create a community feel, or whatever, etc. But I couldn't help but think 'why?' There's literally a cafe across road, one with (probably) better coffee and a humongous selection of cakes, pastries, sandwiches etc. There's no way the bike shop can compete with that and you wouldn't expect them to either. The cafe doesn't sell bikes btw.

I called in at Destination Bike in Box Hill village for coffee and cake at the weekend. It's a bike shop with a cafe and very nice. There were some other cyclists there who I assume were existing as a tribe. But I didn't talk to them.

From what's mentioned in the video, the only facility I would appreciate is a place to wash my bike(s) indoors.
I have a garden space, but in winter it's :cold: and dark.
The hole spiel in the video reminds me of the time I took my bike for a repair, in the posh shop (Billy Bisland @Brandane) I had bought it from - was on sale ^_^
The mechanic asked me "are you riding today?"...
Ya pillock, can you no see my commuting set up, of course I'm riding, how am I going to get to my work otherwise?
I'm an utilitarian cyclist ^_^
