And dead people emit CO2 as they decay, so tax them too.
They don't have any form of vehicle specific taxation , like our car tax. The tax on the vehicle purchase and the fuel used is the only contribution they make, so In would think their public roads receive their funding from elsewhere.
Later on in the comments someone states that 3% of the cost of maintaining and building roads is through motoring specific taxes, the rest through general taxes. They don't have any form of vehicle specific taxation , like our car tax. I really hate to be contrary on this matter (I often have 'discussions' with a motoring-mad friend about it), but who does one believe?: http://www.iam-bristol.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=538&Itemid=1Later on in the comments someone states that 3% of the cost of maintaining and building roads is through motoring specific taxes, the rest through general taxes.
So it sounds like a similar situation to here really, that motoring is subsidised massively by general taxation.
If you try to tell this to people I find they refuse to believe it.
The public at large are under the misguided impression that motoring contributes positively to the economy.
They missed out the cost of pollution, emergency services, general traffic policing, health because it isn't safe to walk little Jonny to school cos all the other Mums drive etcI really hate to be contrary on this matter (I often have 'discussions' with a motoring-mad friend about it), but who does one believe?: http://www.iam-bristol.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=538&Itemid=1
I realise that the IAM is not a disinterested organisation, but is there an unbiased source for a more inclusive figure? Especially after the recent election I've got very wary of any statistics, as everyone was cherry-picking to a ridiculous degree, even the Greens. If the 'cycling lobby' blames all the world's ills and government expenditure on cycle-phobic motorists, they tend to get agitated. I would rather like to have an inclusive but realistic breakdown of motoring taxes and expenditure from a reliable disinterested source. They missed out the cost of pollution, emergency services, general traffic policing, health because it isn't safe to walk little Jonny to school cos all the other Mums drive etc
