Cycling Optimists

[All uphill]

It's easy to become disillusioned by some of the negative voices we hear about cycling; I prefer to look at the positives.

My recent act of optimism was to buy a Spa Calder saddle.

It's a lovely thing, but I must be an optimist to think I'll live and cycle long enough for it to become comfortable!

How have you demonstrated your cycling optimism?

The first time I pinned a number on my jersey I was full of hope and optimism. The kicking I got made me realise I was destined for a life as a club racer.

My biggest piece of optimism was test riding a Brompton while 15kg over the manufacturers weight limit. Not the bikes fault as I exceeded rhe design brief, but the way it flopped and flexed called to mind a cross trainer rather than a bicycle.

Racing a London 2012 Paralympic gold medalist in Australian rules pursuit at the velodrome and expecting to last longer than I did before being caught.

I rode up alter lane in bingley a mile long steep up hill unmade road, on my cx bike with slick tyres, got most if way up until 4x4 wanted to pass😡
Then saw dear in the road in front of me.

Then on return saw a dear swimming in the canal!

the 4x4 drivier knocked her into the canal whilst trying to squeeze past her tartan shopping trolley pull along bag thingy.

Buying a Garmin Edge Touring, reading the manual, and thinking "Wow, this has so many features. I'll never want to buy another GPS again".

Good luck. I have the Grand Colombier looming on my horizon. I'm fondly dreaming that I'll be able to keep up with my septagenarian riding mates.

Anne Mustoe must have been an optimist, she cycled 12,000 miles around the world without the ability to mend a puncture.

I'm optimistic that I'll be OK, despite running Gatorskin tyres tubeless
