Cycling route Lydgate, Oldham

I have to take my son who is a musician to play at a wedding in Lydgate tomorrow. Can anyone recommend a route of approximately 25 miles so that I don't have to sit in the back of some randomer's wedding?

Woohoo! You can ride through Diggle, Delph and Dobcross, pick up the A58 Littleborough to Halifax road, climb the nicely-graded mini Alp to Blackstone Edge, whizz down the longest descent in England to Calderdale, turn left, meet @ColinJ for tea in Hebden Bridge then speed on back round to Littleborough.

Pretty much every interesting route you could plan from there will be hilly so if you meant 25 flat miles then I'd restrict it to more like 15-20 hilly miles. I think Globalti's idea would be too long for a quick time-filler.

How about riding to the visitor centre cafe at Hollingworth Lake and then returning by the same route in reverse? You'd get some flat miles in and some climbing too. About 19 miles in total.

Cheers @ColinJ - that looks good and somewhere I have never been. I have, I think, about 2 1/2 hours to kill.
I have spent many a Whit Friday marching around Delph, Diggle and Dobcross with my cornet but have never cycled in the area.

But as you well know, a very hilly area and the amount of climbing may limit the distance you want to cover.

I remember from the Scarborough ride you are a more than competent cyclist. Having said that I would limit it to 20 miles or so in case you have a puncture or whatever

I would head out through Greenfield and do the Isle of Skye climb over Saddleworth Moor. It's long but not steep and your reward is a long sweeping descent into Holmfirth. Wilshaw Lane gets you over to Metham and then on to Slaithwaite.

Head to Marsden and you can either take the main road to Uppermill which is not steep but can be fairly busy. Or take the old road via the golf course which is much quieter but quite a stiff climb.

Descend to Uppermill and you're just about back

Did @ColinJ 's route to Hollingworth Lake in the end as there seemed fewer opportunities to get lost. A great little ride - thanks. Currently sitting outside the church listening to the Fairey Band blasting out the Fireworks Suite. What a great venue for a wedding
