Out of interest, is anyone using 'touchless technology' , that being eye tracking ?
Could something like the Galaxy S4 turn the screen on only when you look at the map ?

Just to follow this up, the S4 setting you're thinking of is "Smart Stay". Once the screen is activated, it stays on if you're looking at it - it doesn't switch on (from off) if you look at it.

You're supposed to mount the device on your handlebars rather than leave it in your panniers - it makes it much easier to see the display and use the buttons.

I set this thread up covering a smartphone as an alternative. It people want to try the smartphone approach it covers things like battery life etc.

Accuracy seems very subjective. Both the iphone and garmin GPS chips sample at 1hz it’s what the software does with the data. Garmin’s algorithm seems to do a lot more smoothing of “bad” GPS reading.

Accuracy depends on more than just the sample rate. I find my Edge 510 considerably more accurate than my iPhone in built-up areas, for example. But then I also find my Edge 510 more accurate than my ForeRunner 405CX in built-up areas too.

The other thing to realise is that properly mounted GPS is far more accurate than one in your pocket or panniers.

Mine is fine even at the bottom of my panniers, but I simply don't need supreme accuracy.

I have a Garmin Edge 705 which is a few years old now, but is great for navigation. It also lasts for a good few days, so if you are away on tour for a while no need to worry about charging every day

Using for several days has never been an option for mine.

It lasts for about 12 hours with everything going, it is less

On my Edge 200, I used a breadcrumb trail to Clevedon the other day, it was rather useful for unfamiliar sections of the route. I've got the 100km Tasty Cheddar Audax route saved onto it for when I have a bit of spare time...

I connect it up to my home PC every week to upload rides and charge the battery. I have it syncing with Strava. All in all for the money it's rather good.

The only thing is I would like it to display the current time when I'm riding along. Can't find out how to achieve that.

I don't think it can display the current time. I'd like that too. It looks like the Garmin Edge Touring does so I may get that but that'll have to wait until after Christmas now.
