If I don't have the MP3 on, I sing songs to myself - preferably long ones I can remember all the words to. This is a narrow field - usually "The Gasman Cometh" by Flanders and Swann, and "Growltiger" from Cats.

Other times, I often find myself counting crank revolutions.
 
Another thing I do is concentrate on breathing...but if there's a song involved it's either:
'Ain't no mountain high enough'
'River deep mountain high'
or
'heaven knows I'm miserable now'

During the times when I used to ride with an Ipod on I had a compilation of house anthems (the singalong ones) which I had to resist the urge to sing to so as not to scare the natives.

I'm a counter- I'll do 50 pedal strokes, then 5 lamp posts, come on son, this isn't all that bad... keep the speed above (insert target here) you can keep it up...


Oooo- just seen a funny red light fying through the sky- just outside Wakefield if anyone's around. I don't say that to myself- just saw a red light in the sky...
