to clarify, spds are small, two bolted cleats which need only small pedals.

spd-sl are similar to look/time etc in appearance and are characterised by a large, 3 bolted cleat protruding from the bottom of the shoe, and a larger pedal which looks like it is a big hole surrounded by metal.

I've heard that the M424 are considerably less well thought of compared to the pedals I linked to earlier. (I know, the spec and look is very similar)

DLB,
I use the exact same pedals on my CB Hybrid with Spesh Taho shoes and they are a great combination - very easy to clip in to.
They can also be used occasionally with ordinary trainers etc. Although the binding still sticks up slightly, it is perfectly OK for short journeys.
I also use the Taho's with PD-M520's on my road bike.
