Only the Iranian people aren't free. The regime crushes any dissent and Human rights abuses are frequent and the treatment of women who so much as flap an eyelid toward a man are sentenced to death for comitting adultery, but apart from that eveything is fine and dandy .................

So you believe you're free? Stop paying your tax and see how long before you're in-front of the judge, for rebelling against the rules of the land.

Irrelevant of what the monument is supposed to represent, relative to what actual freedom the country’s people have, does not change the fact that [from an engineer’s perspective] I’m looking forward to seeing it.

I’m an atheist, but I still admire cathedrals and pyramids.

Good for you, Yellow7. One striking thing - I don't think I've ever read a cycle blog that didn't rave about Iran. In a good way, I mean.

What a load of BS and you know it is. Paying taxes has nothing to do with being free or not. You seem to place greater value on your own pecuniary postition than those denied basic human rights which you ignore.

Hi,

I am thinking of having a few months away cycling and was wondering if anyone would like to come along for the ride. At the moment i have 3 ideas

1) uk to Asia via Turkey and Iran and then keep trying to head east.Setting off sometime around July.
2) uk to Morocco via France ,Spain ,Morocco and maybe back via Portugal and North spain.again around July or August time
3) vietnam, cambodia and Thailand setting off around November

Has anyone else got any cycling ideas they would like to throw in the mix??
I will look to camp it to keep costs down and really just head off to find some sun for once.

I am a 37 year old guy and facy getting out of the uk for a while,if you fancy a few months away please send me a message!!

A nice ride would be start at Singapore, up the East coast of Malaysia, into Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. I did this in route in 1996 having planned to go through China to Hong Kong, however I was refused entry into Vietnam for the simple reason I was British, and during 1996 the Vietnamese Boat People in Hong Kong were being forcibly repatriated back home prior to Britain Handing back HK to the China and they were worried I would be attacked. But during my ride from Siam Reap.to Phnom Pheen, I was shot at, which concentrated the mind in a instant and had me peddling and weaving like crasy until I though I was out of range.
I have since been back to Vietnam found now they welcome cyclists, and I found it quite a enjoyable country to cycle in.
I have also cycled around Malaysia, Up the west Coast then across the top on the Thai border then back down to Singapore on the East Coast. the East coast is a nice ride, on the west coast the roads can be hairy, unless you use the inland roads which meander through the Palm and Pineapple Plantations.
Just a few ideas to help you.

Will those of you who are not interested in seeing amazing places full of history and great people please leave the thread and go to Disneyland or somewhere and let the rest of us go and experience the world...thanks.

Its hard to believe its the touring and Expedition forum isnt it ? ^_^ You probably need to check if there are any bears en route as well, I mean Canada is a complete no go now for some on here.

I would echo crankarms thoughts. Iranians in Iran are different to Iranians out of Iran. Iran is led by a hard line Islamic leadership. The Revolutionary Guard certainly don't wear skirts but they way be laughing and joking with you as they tape electrodes to your intimate parts. Best avoided I'd have thought.

The vast amount of Iranian people are great people to meet, and are far from the subjective people the media like to portray. OK, the country is run by a few nutters and no more so than any other middle east country, Ok some of the rules the Government impose on the people may seem extreme for us westerners but from my own expectancies it is the only way to control a tribal country as per the whole of the Middle east. Most of the populace know where they stand regarding the rules, and understand the results if you break them.

When it comes to the lone cyclist, you will find that you would be welcomed, taken into their homes and given their hospitality, and in most cases will refuse any offer of payment. However, there are times and places where a few little monetary presents smooths the journey. But as any other country, you might well fall prey to being robbed, ripped off or some similar problem, but the chances are low, as the result for the culprits is in most cases death if caught. Hanging by craning seem the favourite at the moment!

So don,t be put off by the gloom and doom peeps, just do it, you will be surprised the amount of fellow cyclists you will meet transiting through the country both east and westwards.
