The number of deaths and injuries of cyclists is rising at a "worrying rate", a safety charity has warned.

Government figures for England, Scotland and Wales showed a 3% increase in the year to September 2010, compared with the previous 12 months.

However, overall road safety improved, with fatalities at a record low.

[Emphasis added]

That doesn't make any sense!

edit: Just realised what was meant here. I think the journalist is trying to say that overall road fatalities have fallen but cyclist deaths have risen. Poorly written, though.

There has been a rise in the number of cyclists, so there will be a rise in the number of cyclists injured or killed as well.

Thats is not the same as a rise in the frequency of cycling injuries and deaths.

These articles are always badly written.

Government figures for Britain showed a 3% rise in casualties to 17,430 in the year to September 2010, compared with the previous 12 months.

I'd guess the number of cyclists has risen by far more than 3% during that period, meaning cycling is actually safer than it used to be.

edit: ^^^ oops, Zoiders beat me to it!

Its worrying but Accident Collision statistics should really be compared over a three year period; which is really hard if you are one of the 'statistical blips' in between :-( Over that period cyclist ksi have decreased; hopefully this current rise is just a statistical blip in an overall downwards trend; fingers crossed. Try googling a few local plans their progress report show more info and a better rate (except Leicester iirc :-( )

A journalist who doesn't understand statistics.

No surprise to me, I worked with them for many years and their maths was always poor.

More people driving is an indication of better times, in the world of Edmund King. .

AA president Edmund King said fuel prices had changed driving habits, leading to a growth in cycling and bringing increased accidents.
"These trends need to be countered and the country's road safety effort has to prepare for better times when more people will drive," he added.

What's this King fellow on then :?:

"But since neither pedestrian nor cyclist casualties are falling as fast as motorist casualties, we need to do more to tackle bad driving and improve conditions for the road users outside cars."
True THAT!

97% of stats are made up.

Agree with yellow fang, drivers seem to be getting worse. I blame tech in cars, making lazy drivers.

Did both journalists (the one stealing from the other) take Chris Peck's use of the word 'worrying' and distort his meaning? Or am I just not reading it right?

Reported serious injuries are up but deaths are down.

The way some people cycle it's surprising that there aren't more accidents. What is strange, though, is that so many of the reported fatal accidents involve experienced cyclists. (And lorries, of course. )
