"This may have been unintentional, but I am concerned it was not: the rider was wearing a reflective jacket and lights and would have been easy to see."

eh?

What's not to understand? If I wear hi-viz in some areas I get attacked.

had an apple whizz across my front once from some flats, if it hadn't hit a lights mount and left a sliver of apple I'd have thought I'd imagined it

a bleeding iris doesn't sound like anything to joke about

That isn't the point of the statement though is it?

The point of the statement is to warn other cyclists about the risks of hi-viz surely. It shows they at least have an understanding of the issues.

No the point is that the target was seen early due to his hi-viz meaning they could prepare for the attack.

Better put IMHO,I feel pretty crap and I dont want an argument.

Over the years I've been hit on the back with an orange and in the head with an egg, both during the hours of darkness. I suppose I was fortunate in both circumstances in that the orange hit my rucksack and the egg hit my helmet.

A couple of years ago I was coming home from work at about 0300 in Bexleyheath and had something heavy thrown at me from the rear passenger seat of a car that was stopped at red lights on the other side of the road to me. Fortunately I heard laughter from the car before the thing was thrown so I was 'aware' of something and saw it coming and it narrowly missed my face. In the heat of the moment I turned round to 'have a word' but the car sped off through the red light. In hindsight it wasn't a good idea to turn round as there were 4 people in the car and if they'd decided to stay I'd have been on a hiding to nothing, especially as there was nobody else about!

I think that if we are to get indignant at what the police say, it is important that we don't just snip statements and twist them to our point of view. The full text is:

"This may not seem too serious an incident, but the piece of fruit was travelling at high speed and it has left the cyclist in a lot of pain."

That does not sound to me as if the Police are dismissing it and the comment about the fruit being thrown "unintentionally" probably refers to many people throwing litter from their cars. How many apple trees can be seen at the side of busy roads and motorways where motorists have thrown apple cores out of their windows? So it could have been unintentional as the driver or passenger was littering, rather than a deliberate attempt to hit the cyclist.

I'm not defending the driver/passenger since it probably was deliberate, but the original post was not a true reflection of what was said.

yes i know i was just trying to jazz it up some, but those were the words said. Maybe ive been reading the Metro too much of late.

serious incident all the same.

only had something nearly hit me once, not countring cars, buses, other cyclists. IT was some lump of plastic thing from someoens house. I dont think it was meant for me as there were some "youths" on the pavement and think it was meant for them, but nearly got me. would have def' have casued a nasty injury if it had hit me though

Reminds me of a song that went:
"There once was a young man, his name was Lord Jim,
He complained that his wife threw tomatoes at him,
Now tomatoes are soft and don't injure the skin,
But this one it did, it was inside a tin!"

Hope the chap in question makes a swift recovery, and that karma catches up with the fruit-flinger in question.

Eye damage is not going to be too good. I think the quote re lights and hi-vis is meant to mean that it can't have been accidental as in someone just lobbing rubbish out of the car and didn't know there was somebody there because it should have been easy to see him, rather than it made him an easy target.

Poor sod. Hope they find the guilty parties, though that seems unlikely. Hopefully others who might think "it's just a larf innit" doing stuff like this will think again. That also seems unlikely, sadly.
