That poor girl!!! How awful.

I generally feel quite safe on my bike but agree that country paths can feel quite threatening when you're alone - I tend to stick to roads and lanes. It makes me feel sick, that poor girl.

I hope someone else with a conscience finds him then leave him where he'll never be found again.

I don't want to start a capital punishment debate but there are some crimes that I cannot tolerate.

I 100% agree, why should a woman not be safe on her own.

Buy a wooden kubaton, not one with spikes or a hidden blade. Keep it on your keys as a keyring and use that as a striking weapon. The law for carrying them is a very grey area, they are not illigal... but if you caused someone harm you might face some legal action (same with keys).

The Dlock would give a good hit, but easy for them to grab. Take up Judo or Jiu Jitsu if you really want to defend yourself against this.

The three best ways to avoid attacks for male or female is:

Don't hang around with a-holes
Don't walk in secluded areas
Don't hang about kebab shops at 3am

Add -

carry a very loud personal alarm
ride non-stop anywhere there are very few people (especially after dark)
go to a short self defence course

Blokes convicted of rape should leave their balls behind in the courtroom.

A one time colleague of mine used to have an extra personal alarm fixed under her bike saddle, with a cord and clip she attached to herself, so that if she was ever pulled off the bike it would go off. (She kept forgetting to undo it before she got off intentionally though)

This is a shocking story. I hope the lady recovers and can get back to cycling soon.

A camera, mobile phone close to hand, big D-lock (they work as a big nasty lorry driver thought better of hitting me seeing it ready to strike his head) are essential and I read on US sites that bear spray is very effective . When some one has grabbed you a swift hard knee into the groin area  can be very effective meaning immediate release and no chance of being pursued :B).

This sort of thing does worry me too. I have bought a personal alarm for my bike, and strapped it on the handlebar. Just a pull of a cord sets it off. I was speaking to a police friend this evening, just about this sort of thing happening. He says an excellent idea to carry an alarm.

That poor poor woman, dear god, what she went through, that is awful
