Can someone please define a close overtake? Is there a set definition or is it a matter of opinion?

The law has been broking by the cyclist hence the reason why that is being reported.

There's not a strict definition as such, but a judge is on record as saying “every cyclist is allowed his wobble" and commented that 1m was the minimum that a cyclist should be given.

After any incident where one of the parties flees the scene, the remaining party is at liberty to say whatever they wish as a description of such incident.

I don't believe a word of it.

Every road user should be able to signal their intent to manoeuvre at an appropriate time, for cyclists this is via an am signal so if you don't feel you can comfortably signal right (ie. arm fully stretched out) then the car is too close while passing.

I'm inclined to agree with jimbo on this. The article has a strong whiff of bum gravy about it.

OTOH it wouldn't be the first time a cyclist lost the plot and bashed up a motorist's car undeservedly. I'm not likely to believe the journalism regardless, and my suspicious nature casts a raised eyebrow towards the motorist.

On balance the comments are very much against the slant of the article.

CEN keeps posting cycling related news stories like this. What can be done to change that?

Wasn’t there, so this is just conjecture, but something doesn’t add up here – you’re the Volvo driver, see a cyclist ahead of you, they seem “agitated” as the car in front is overtaking by a busy roundabout and there is no room to do so – and seeing this you still decide to overtake?

Volvo driver probably knocked him off as he passed to close and then had a pop at him for damaging his car… but, as RichardT points out, if the cyclist paid road tax then this wouldn’t of happened in the first place…

Road rage cyclist punches hole in a Volvo

"The 4x4 went past the cyclist and as the Volvo drove past the cyclist and as the Volvo drew level with him the cyclist gesticulated and then smashed the rear nearside window of the vehicle with his right fist."

Braking a car window with your bare hands is difficult (rescue teams use hammers, thieves use bricks et al). Here my question: Could you smash while on your bike the side window of a car that is alongside you??? Anyone on this list with a good understanding of the physical forces required who could confirm or disprove my thought?

My general rule for passing to closely would be, if I can touch your car you definitely are...and if you scare the crap out of me you probably are too.

Make them realise that their readership is interested in cycling and would like some positive stories/less biased stories to entertain motorists and sell car adverts at the back of the paper.

Handy to also get into trouble for 'going equipped'.
But Officer, I was going equipped to deal with any emergency involving people stuck in a place with a window that needs smashing quickly to rescue them...
