On dull days I light up and carry a rechargeable pk of AA and AAA batteries as backup.

Me too. I always carry 2 AA's and about 4 AAA's (because most of my lights use AAA's).

If the worst comes to the worst, then I can always choose a route which avoids roads as I normally ride along the coast.

I have two at the front and two at the back, i will ride with only one on the back and one on the front, the others are a backup incase one fails.

you're asking so much less of a rear light that i think anything half decent will do

That's it, though it looks like they are actually fibre optics. I'm going to see if you can stick one of those under the top tube for side visibility.

Got it, wishlisted. Though if it flashes, I'm probably going to get a lot of room from confused drivers thinking I'm about to turn a corner.

It says it does constant or strobe so you should be alright.
