so just to be clear, cars are allowed to pull over and stop in a cycle lane with a broken line?

and some on here seem to be advocating behaviour that in a motorist I suspect most on here would find despicable

Cars are allowed to stop in cycle lane delinated by a broken line when that cycle lane is not in operation. If it's a mandatory cycle lane (one marked with a solid line) drivers shouldn't stop there at all. Then there is a rule which says drivers should not stop where it obstructs cyclists' use of cycle facilities. As for cycling into the back of a parked vehicle - cyclist's fault 100% - should be looking where you are going, and in the case of having to stop suddenly - should be leaving enough distance between you & the vehicle in front to stop without shunting into it. To the OP - check your home contents insurance to see if you have cover on it - you may well have.

One of the few exceptions is when you get a swoop and squat - someone changing lanes into your path and not leaving you with enough time/space to be able to stop.

Tynan, what specific behaviour and post # are you referring to? I think you must have mixed up topics, or misinterpreted a post? The only thing I can guess you're referring to is to not admit liability at the scene of the collision, which is fairly standard advice. That doesn't mean covering up the facts and being anything other than totally honest when speaking to your own insurance company.
