I assume your cable enough to have the rear drop out spacing stretched to accomodate 10 speed ?
The older frames are liable to have a126 mm gap in the dropouts whereas newer bikes tend to have 130 mm .
Good point, you can get a 130 rear wheel in to a 126 spacing but if it's a older 120 spacing frame (like one that accepts 27" wheels) then you ain't got a hope(so you're stuck with a screw on freewheel too)
 
How knobbly do you need/want your tyres to be? I've ridden some trails on my claud with 27" road tyres and it's been OK, I could've done with a little bit more grip in places but it wasn't a problem. At least you know you can get min of 32mm between the forks

Ive ridden across a football field on 23 mm slicks , it was dry though.
