I think this is getting more and more common. I had a similar issue with my MTB when it was on the roof of my car driving through Bristol.
Dodgy looking blokes following me in some scabby motor, in the end I went around the same round about three times, by the second time round of following me I think they had realised that I was on to them and they left pretty sharpish.

Mind you its not a new tactic, people used to follow others from supermarkets etc... that had bought big old tvs or even shed loads of booze to find out where they lived and rob them.
