Alcohol is far worse than society knows.
Alcohol, tobacco & drugs are the three 'synthetic' slow killers that most folk indulge in because the crippling / fatal effects don't show themselves for years, then it's probably too late.
The first two did for my two siblings, my ex and several friends.

Went back to work early after a knee op.The hospital had not cleared me.On nights the knee packed up,i went down on the floor, cried with shock, ambulance took me to hospital from work,The Surgeon who had done the job had a clinic that morning i stayed he saw me,he went ballistic,i told him my job was on the line because for years it had locked up with fluid and kept me off work till it settled down, which could be two hours minimum,i was on a stage 2 ,stage 3 was goodbye,we don't care how long you have worked here,i was off sick for NINE more weeks. The knee problem has never come back.

I was a smoker for years. Nothing much dafter health-wise than that.
Likewise. Age regular 16-18 not too many but age 18-45 20+ a day.

Gave up over 20 years ago without any as yet no medical diagnosis relating to my having smoked.

But on several occasions seeing GP with not major complaints that just wouldn't clear I initially got "Can't see anything, maybe give it a bit longer" then "Do you smoke?" and answering "Gave up over 20 years ago" the GP changed to "In that case X-rays & blood test".

Even having given up so long ago still a big consideration of medical risk.

Re: the "Drugs"
Unsure about forum rules discussing personal experiences on such issues but one of the aspects of (illegal) drug impacts is you actually never know what you are using or what it's been mixed with. Hence as a first step to reducing harm in the UK we really need to provide better facilities so users can test what they have.

Saturday night, more than a few years ago. I was getting my bike ready for next days club run. Was trying to fit a new pair of mudguards, but they were a bit too wide at one point.

So got my Stanley knife out (can you guess what happened yet?), and holding the mudguard with my left hand, tried to take a slither off the mudguard. However, the blade went straight through the plastic and stopped when it hit the bone in my first finger!

Trip to A&E and they gave me a couple of stitches.
I still made the club run the next day.

I was a smoker for years. Nothing much dafter health-wise than that.

Incidentally, one of my covid jabs gave me a tremendously accurate facsimile of a hangover the next day. I'd gone into central London to watch a friend in the Marathon but I had to bail and go home to bed. (I've been teetotal for 18 years, but I used to inflict some monster hangovers on myself)
I usually only really get a hang - over from spirits and I had been drinking beer, so when I say I was 'half cut', it was a slight exaggeration, but, still, it does affect me the morning after slightly (I usually just want to sleep and it is actually heartburn/acid reflux that affects me the most - The old Gaviscon or Rennies are never far away, and if they are, milk helps instead).

When I said I had the 'headache from hell' and that it wasn't alcohol inflicted, I meant it.

Starting smoking in early teens wasn't very smart. Smoke free since I was 34.
