It's a 5 series, I think, so a rear seat could be taken down and the boot space used.

Not all do I think.

Ah! Yes ... the good ol' saloon! Useless design! All that boot space that is unusable because only half of the rear of the car opens!

I, being a practical man, made sure 'n' bought a hatchback.

Wuss

I had a coupe and never failed to get anything in it, bikes would go in the rear boot without having to put any parts in the cabin (yes wheels had to come off, not the end of the world).

Probably not the most dangerous obstruction on the roads, but he still cannot see out of his mirror.
Are you sure about that? The carpet is above the mirror and, looking in that picture, you can see the reflection of the driver and the sky through the car.

There are, IMO, many failings with carrying a carpet like that but I doubt there is any problem with using the mirror.

This one passed me earlier in the year:

I don't think a helmet would have helped here.

That is similar to the one I saw a few years back, I was a passenger in a three and a half ton truck at the time, we followed the car for about half a mile.

Hopefully this will work: http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/topstories/2011/08/25/hi-bc-110825-rcmp-fridge-in-car-6col.jpg

Whilst this is shamelessy found from google, I've stopped someone one for doing something very similar. Only difference was the fridge freezer was a bit smaller, and their method of restraining it was to have a ratchet strap round the fridge, fed through the saloon boot and the 'ski-hole' in the seats with their mate hanging onto the strap.

It even fit into his back seat, he just didn't want to put it on his leather!

I think (although I am not sure), but with the exception of a trailer, you aren't supposed to have anything attached to the vehicle that exceeds the horizontal dimensions of the vehicle. At least that's what I've always been careful to do when tying things to the roof rack of my car.

And yes, that carpet would easily fit inside the fool's car. I have a mondeo, probably about the same length as the car in that pic, and I can fit 10ft lengths of timber inside it! That carpet is significantly less than 10ft long ...

you can put things on the car that are slightly wider or a fair bit longer than the vehicle.

I've often had kayaks on the roof of my car which is the size of a fiesta, the kayak hangs over the back of the vehicle by a foot or so, any longer and i ought to be hanging something from it to warn people,

I've also had racks on (kayaks again) wider than the roof of the vehicle, but narrower than the door mirrors
