Well, it was nice while it lasted, but this will probably be my last post.

I've just fixed kitchen cupboard door I broke yesterday. All it needed was a new door hinge. Bought one from the hardware store, looks exactly like the one I broke, same size, same fitting, same everything........

Except the bastard screws that hold the door bit of the hinge onto the door. The new ones are about 1mm longer than the ones I took out. I know this cos thats the amount thats now sticking through the splintered remains of the laminate on the front of the door......

The Missus is going to KILL me.

Can't you just cut or file the screws down?

Failing that, now seems like a good time to go for a long tour!

It's not the screws per se that are the problem, I've taken them out and added a washer so they are the correct length.

It's the fact they cracked the laminate frontpiece. It looks worse than it is (or so I'll plead in my defence) cos the doors are very light maple.

I'm tempted not to say anything, and hope she doesnt notice... but experience tells me that's not going to work.

Headgardener's wood stopper suggestion is a good one. I've seen some quite light ones.

You'll have a lot left over but if you can present both the problem and a solution then you might get away with only a mild kicking.

Buy something decorative or ornamental and put it with something irreversible like superglue over the offending screws. If you are a normal bloke this will be totally out of character sot that even if she thinks it's crap she'll be so touched by your pathetic efforts at creativity that she won't say so.

IF you can't fix it, f**k it so no other f****r can fix it!

I like the idea of swapping the door though! Mind you, I think I would have used the original screws!

If it is only splintered outwards a little, try getting a peice of flat wood and clamping it VERY firmly to the door, which may have the effect of squashing the splintery bits inwards. A nice big bit of wood so the edges do not cut into the door.

Other option is, if you know where the kithcen came from and it is newish, is to see if you can get a new door.....
