On my commute, I see some without lights as well as the more annoying, and greater in number, riders with over bright, badly angled lights.
But I've no inclination to interact with any of them (or with any of the far more frequent bloody useless drivers for that matter), while I'm just trying to get home, so I just ignore the bloody lot.

Back on the somewhat serious issue of nighttime cycling without lights. Clearly it is a dangerous thing to do, but on the other hand if it encourages drivers to be aware that there maybe cyclists that are not lit up like Christmas trees then the roads at night become safer for those of us that do cycle with lights at night.

It's not a serious issue.

Agreed, it is not comparable to serious issues such as the NHS crisis or child poverty. What I meant was that I was making a serious point as opposed to the OP which was very tongue-in-cheek.
Careful, we're in the wrong part of the forum for serious points...

All sorts of people ride without lights, I've seen loads of middle aged well to do types in York riding without them at night.
Its totally upto the person, if they then get knocked off their bikes as a result they have to deal with the consequences.
I think its best to concentrate on what your doing, theres nothing you can do about other people.
Aye. I used to tell them their lights have failed but there's too many now. Contrary to widespread opinion, cycling without lights doesn't seem to make collisions much more likely. Actually, I rather they were unlit than using the dazzling shoot sold by most bike shops!

Serious but incorrect as far as we can tell, with unlit cycling being a factor in only 2% of collisions. It's not demonstrably dangerous.

....I'm going to wear a neon yellow and pink CanCan dress and cycle down the middle of the Tyne Bridge without any lights in the middle of the day to see if I get seen...(this may not actually happen, as the Tyne Bridge is part of the central motorway)

Tyne Bridge isn't part of the motorway - it's perfectly legal to cycle over it. Looking forward to seeing you on Look North in your neon yellow & pink can-can dress. ^_^
