The thing about Ortlieb panniers is that if you were to buy a pair as a teenager you could fairly confidently put them in your will for your grandchildren.

But I don't even have any children, let alone grandchildren. Who do I leave them to?

I'm thinking it may soon be time for new panniers. I have a pair of pretty small Altura ones, and one has just started to wear through on the bottom. Might treat myself for this summer's tour, but if I get anything bigger, I'll only carry more stuff....

I was looking through an Ortlieb catalogue, and they had some in a lovely colour combo - Hazel and Black, very classy looking, quite like Barley Carradice. Would suit my Gal beautifully.

I'm not being at all fascetious but how can panniers wear out at the bottom unless either:

a. You've fitted them a bit low and they've been rubbing along the tarmac.

or,

b. You're in the habit of stuffing naked scalpel blades loose into the bottom of them.

Want good quality panniers in a mid-range price.

I know that Orlieb are the benchmark, but I don't want to pay Ortlieb prices.

Most usage will be a 25 mile daily commute. Occasional UK overnight tours in the spring/summer.

Would prefer the roll-over panniers - i.e two side sections and one on top.

If you are using them on a daily basis then they are going to get a lot of wear. You can either have cheap or durable, the EBC ones are good value, or if you are looking for roll tops try the Vaude Aqua Back.

Well, not the actualy bottom, but at the bottom of the part that is bonded to the stiff plate that holds the hooks etc. It'll be where the flexible bit meets the stiff bit, and one bit can give and the other can't. Just wear and tear, from carrying stuff including tools, allotment stuff, touring kit and shopping. I must have had those panniers for 5 or 6 years now, and the one wearing through will have been used everytime I rode a bike.

My new trike is very low to the ground, but even so, I think once I fit a rack, my panniers are unlikely to drag...
