Dedicating one lane to cycling

Lived and works there for a year, and average speeds are indisputably lower, and judiciously enforced compared to here (at least in Pennsylvania). It was a bit OTT having Pontiac Firebird really.

Many roads in London have a full lane dedicated to cyclists it's just we have to share them with buses every now and again.
These "bus" lanes are incredibly well respected by other motorists largely because of the cctv cameras and fines so they can be a pleasure to ride in.
Was disappointed to read a while back how Liverpool's bus lane approach was ditched by the mayor.

Sounds like a plan. I had a discussion with my wife (argument!!) that unless you need a car van lorry for work you should not be able to own a private vehicle until you were say over 30. This would force the younger generation and younger adults to use other forms of transport. Ah yes the reliable bike.

This is exactly the sort of mindset I would love to see rid of. This sort of thinking has resulted in much more difficult, awkward and costly procedures involving obtaining a motorcycle licence. Consequently people are put off and will more likely just go with a car licence than faff about with the various tests.

I do agree about the point made of segregated cycle lanes, particularly along very busy roads. Unfortunately such lanes are usually interrupted by junctions and other obstacles.

Ha ha - I think you are right! There are markings for a narrow cycle lane where the A58 descends into Littleborough. I was whizzing down it yesterday afternoon and as usual I had to keep re-entering the main traffic flow because of the number of parked cars completely blocking the cycle lane.

I like the 'cyclists belong here' and 'full lane' signage mentioned by ianrauk above.

Would only work with affordable, and reliable public transport. Which this country does not have. I work in a major city centre (Manchester), and I am unable to use public transport, so have to join the cars.

Really? Public transport my end of Manchester is pretty good and improving with the cross-city bus links & metro expansion.

I have to travel into manchester, as I live in Warrington.

I could use the train, but I often do shifts that end between midnight and 3am. Trains, and buses out of Manchester at that time is non-existant.

So many complain about city centre traffic, but in the past month or 2, I can think of 3 car parks, totalling around 2500 spaces that are on the edge of the city that have closed, forcing more traffic into the city.

What I would love to see is a park and ride, not a bus, but a cycle.

a Large free car park, about 10 miles out of the city, free of charge, to then cycle in. Could even have a nice cycle route for it, I am sure that it would get a LOT of cars out of the centre.

This is in my manifesto, and with an upper age limit of 60.

Yeah, but most councils insist that you can't use P+R for that. You must get the bus. But the buses back from Norwich to its sites stop at 7 or 8. I could get back if I had a bike. But you're not allowed folded bikes on most buses around here. So I'd have to get one out of the dock at the bus station and drive back in with it afterwards. To heck with that! Then the kicker is that they've just stopped running buses from the western P+R to the city! So I still drive into the city centre car parks

Rather sensibly, Cambridge now sells "Park Only" and "Ride Only" tickets at its P+R sites. Why don't all cities? That said, I'm usually visiting the centre or south of Cambridge, so the train works better than the A10 across the fens...

How would they know if you just parked up, took your bike off your car and pedalled off?

CCTV? I think they can probably spot a bike and a number plate with that and it's not like I'd be back very quickly.
