To be fair, I find most motorists are courteous, friendly, and respond positively to a thumbs up or cheery wave. The number of utter chumps I meet while out on a bike is probably no greater than the number I encounter while out on 4 wheels.
Agreed. Despite themselves British drivers are on the whole very good. Having both Holland and France nearby skews our perception of how safe our drivers are as drivers there are so courteous to the point they'd be considered outliers on a global scale. I'd certainly rather cycle here than Ireland, Portugal or heaven forbid the USA!
Rather than have arguments with drivers I've recently taken to replying in a foreign/made up language.
Responding to abuse in a totally mad fashion takes the wind out of their sails.
A cheery "Yes, I'm rather fond of pilchards too" usually does the trick.
Similar to the best tactic I've been told: start going on about how you really need to feed your hamster, how it's unhappy and so on. I'm not sure I could carry that one off with a straight face though.Responding to abuse in a totally mad fashion takes the wind out of their sails.

Not sure that's the most effective, but clearly, always keep out of their reach if you can. The worst road-rager I've faced got out of his car in a deserted street, we shouted a few opinions at each other at a distance, then he moved towards me, so I did a U-turn and rode away just fast enough to maintain the distance between us (and let him do some jogging - he wasn't up to a full run). He shouted "why are you riding away?" "Because I can" was my reply. No way he could u-turn his large car in that narrow street quickly enough to catch me even if he tried. I did keep an eye out for the car for a while, just in case it was a local, but happily I never saw him again. On the rare occasions a 'rager starts I just ignore them. Violence is pointless, and you can be as big and hard as you like but It won't save you from a blade through a vital organ. Ignoring them and carrying on leaves them feeling psychologically impotent having set out to "dominate" you and failing, so is the most effective tactic if you want to get one over on them.
How about telling them your hovercraft is full of eels...Rather than have arguments with drivers I've recently taken to replying in a foreign/made up language. Last week I beeped (airhorn) someone who'd jumped a red in front of me. He started ranting, so I replied, "Mamma Mia, das a spicey-a meat-a ball-a". He looked perplexed, and it cheered me right up. Try it.
The Missus has an Enrique Eglasias Album, which I've learned the lyrics to, so I've also replied
"Si pudiera ser tu heroe
Si pudiera ser tu Dios!"
Apparently it means "I can be your hero baby, I can kiss away the pain", but hey, it sounds good!?
Or there's always "Rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb". Any things better than resorting to swearing/threatening/criticising. Ignoring/looking away winds some drivers up more than confronting them. Just my opinion.
I'm surprised that some of the keyboard warriors on here have the balls to go out in public and start fronting up to motorists. Some of them only talk tough then there's a lengthy fibre opting cable separating them from the person they're confronting.

You still out in Cyprus boab....the uk is bad...but nowhere near as bad as calgary in canada...they are awful awful drivers="BigonaBianchi, post: 3312589, member: 3228"]I hate the thought of having to deal with uk drivers and their shitty attitudes again....out here I've forgotten what a car looks like.....speed limits are lower...65 kmh on main highway here....and enforced vigorously....the UK really sucks when it comes to driver attitudes towards cyclists...mostly those drivers with such shitty attitudes on th eroads have th esame attitude off the roads in other walks of life as well....time to re educate in the ways of common courtesy, respect for others, and simple manners.
My father used to tell me to to always "deal with it, don't start it but be prepared to finish it". Which is an ethic I am now fully programmed to live to and carry out.Yebbut, you have a trump card - a Police Warrant Badge which if I am not wrong would make most road ragers sh!t themselves. I bet you have some good moments when you get it out for some scrote that has given you some abuse and threatened you whilst you are on your bike.
