a fair few of my year got 2.2s and there were a sprinkling of 3rds - but no 1sts. I was absolutely furious about my 2.1 at the time, given the 1sts handed out at other schools for complete schlock, but these days I keep my degree and postgrad certificates in a frame - concealed by a City and Guilds in Brickwork and Masonry!

Whereas when asked "What is 6.1215634 x 3.1348921?"

the scientist scratches head and says "18 or 19 "
the engineer gets his calculator out and says "19.1904407423091"
the accountant (banker) closes the curtains and whispers "what would you like it to be?"

Any engineer that gave me that answer would bring into question the integrity of anything else he has just done. OK, you shouldn't approximate early, but claiming that something can be measured to 15 significant figures would suggest that they are either a fantasist or a fool. Or both.

Mmmm, yes, I'd have to question their source data too. Actually, not too far away from throwing the whole submission back and asking them to do a proper job next time with a qualified engineer.
