Hello

I'm off to Delamere Forest on Thursday for a days cycling on my GT Avalanche

Anyone got any good trails they could tell me about?

Just roam...
the north side of the forest was still closed last time I was there (couple of weeks ago - we live locally) and the website is still saying it is closed as well but it hasn't been updated for a while now but it depends on what you are after...

there are some slightly technical bits, some areas that need a good balance (we have found a plank across a deep stream where the plank is around 6 inches wide and 6 foot long and you don't want to come off it!) some areas that are steep and then there is the old pale (the only real hill around here)... signage wise, the white route (white cycle sign) is fast and wide and easy going, but includes the north side which may or may not still be closed. there is also a smaller area to the east of the road leading north south, that has some good areas to play in - one or two climbs and some steeper sections, nothing really technical but fun to get wet & muddy... there are also the 'play areas' for mtbs and there is a steep descent over on the very far west side as well...

oh and there is also the Delamere Loop should you get bored enough with the forest. nothing technical, reasonably well signed and around 22 miles in total distance. Goes out along the Whitegate Way, then out past Oulton Park, then Tarporley and through Primrose Wood before heading back towards Delamere Forest.

the best info on it seems to be from here http://www.ldwa.org.uk/ldp/downloads/Delamere_Loop_Book_Revised_Layout-2-2.pdf

I have a gpx file of the route if you are interested.

Every Thursday there are night rides round Delamere starting from Tracs bike shop ( next to the cafe ). All abilities are catered for, ride off at 6.30. Why not give it a go, you'll discover loads of trails through the woods and have a good laugh with a sociable bunch.

I have it on good authority (a mates done it) that they are very good. However, do they still run after next week? (clocks changing).

They are very good Smeggers and run all year round, rain or shine. We also have a post ride curry in the cafe every few weeks or so, why not pop along and say hello.

I'm the tall fella on either a Yeti full sus or Cube HT.

Hiya "SatNavSaysStraightOn" I see you have a GPX of the Delemere Loop. I did it last year with my 9 year old on a sunny summers day and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be doing it again soon and a GPX would be great if I could have a copy. Chears

I'll try and dig it out for you. Not sure if I still have it, but there would be a copy on my strava account, so I can always download it from there.
Which way around would you be doing it and where would you be parking? I can always create it from scratch for you because I know it off by heart being a local and it coming within 10m of my front door.

You are a star ! Thanks for the reply. Last time I started at Whitegate station. And I was following the Delamere loop leaflet. Most of the navigation was easy enough except the route through the forest was a bit vague. I know it doesn't really matter if we went off route in parts but it's always nice to complete the "official route". It's a great ride with kids if they are not too confident on the roads yet as the roads it does take you on are generally quiet and 50-60 percent is pathways. Nice cafe in Kelsall if you don't mind a small detour it means you don't have to carry lunch !

Right these should be correct to the letter.

I have tried to make the route obvious where it shadows a road for a bit, but is actually the other side of a hedgerow, so for instance close to my home when you are cycling along a lane called Cuddington Lane, right at the very end the loop goes off on the right hand side about 10m before a road junction and runs along the otherwise of the hedge, so I have put an emphasis on the right before the junction and taken you into the field a touch more than you actually go - this way you find the Delamere Loop rather than going onto a much busier road. It will be obvious when you are there.

There are 2 file types... the tcx files are the ones that you put into your Garmin under the NewFiles folder and then turn the device off and back on again and let it process them.
The gpx files are there for backup.

I have done it all from the Whitegate Station CP where there are toilets. There are also obviously toilets and a café in the Delamere centre and at the Delamere railway station as well. I have not diverted to these. This route is the Delamere Loop to the letter, clockwise or anticlockwise from the Whitegate station.
Any problems, please yell.
