You often get people on MTBs riding around towns without lights. They're presumably not into cycling and don't have lights. They also probably have the "I'm not going very far and I can see without them" approach.

However, I would expect a MTBer emerging from a forest at night to have a high end set of lights on the front if not on the back. How else were they able to see to ride in a forest at night without lights?

Perhaps they just got caught out.

I would'nt feel guilty and I dont feel guilty too with myself, but I do worry a bit that because I am seen, and like wise in your case, the other's wernt, possibly due to us being road-aware and extra good/cautious that drivers then "switch off" to a blank dark object..

I sometimes will tail closely a bike in the dark that has no lights/reflectives until its safe.

I cycle at night with reflective anklets, 2 (due to be 3) rear lights, 1, front light, but 7 backupz on my helmet! It works a treat and I generally get loads of room!

Considered putting a star or fairy on your head/helmet made out of reflective material to complete the look? Sortof a 'yes, I know I look like a christmas tree, and I don't care either'...

On the reflective note, I've got a variety of stuff from CyberGlow and I think they are pretty good if anyone is looking...

Your reaction seems perfectly fair to me.

When riding in the dark, I go for the "wtf is that?" approach .. as in, I want others to see me and wonder wtf I am. Keeps em thinking.

Littlest-LC has a set of battery operated LED stars that she has on as night light .. might see if I can borrow them this Christmas and wrap them round the frame of my commuter.

So, more big love out to all the fellow twinkly sparkly folk.

Thanks for the support fellow Commuters. As a CC member you feel at one with your fellow cyclists and laughing at there expense feels a little... well you know.

Excellent stuff. Year after year I see riders going through the whole winter with no lights and I often wonder how they survive.

Me too! They probably survive because most people are careful individuals i.e. not the idiots we complain about here!

I've done this too. When I was in college, (see Roman invasion AD43) I once had someone ask if I could follow them because they had forgotten there lights! She was very attractive too.... WAIT A MINUTE there could have been more going on there... dam it

All the talk of Christmas Trees has made me think that maybe we should all go that little bit further this Christmas. . . . I'm thinking mini christmas tree, stars etc and embrace the 'sparky' within!

Primark do a good line in high-vis yellow and searing pink knee socks, toasty and visible. I believe they also do sparkly leg warmers and some of the designs have sparkly stars......

Thanks. I run the risk of looking like Leroy from Fame, but don't knock until you've tried I always say! A little visit to primark could be on the cards.

They'll get you notice. I wore my high-vis yellow ones on a midnight ride and got many comments.... I choose to believe they were positive rather than sarcastic.

Yeah, we should all do that - you can usually get that kind of thing in Pound Shops, so it needn't cost much and it only has to last a few weeks....

No you should have told them to get some lights on, it really bugs me when I come across bikes with no lights when its getting dark I also ride a xmas tree but at least I get seen
