As an Asthmatic I know diesel fumes set off an attack in me. Even in the car if I'm following a smokey diesel I can feel my chest tighten within a few seconds. I now switch the ventilation system to recirculate whenever I see smoke from a vehicles exhaust.
There are a few chaps around our town that delight in their scrappage scheme dodging machines belching out thick black soot out of their rears. There's even a Xsara with a large rear window decal 'Choking cyclists since 2005'. I was never a fan of the oil burners, but now that i'm spending more time on the bike, I'm starting to detest them and their smell.
Respro make a big deal about their filter which is probably fine, but are pretty quiet on the importance of the mask making a good seal to your face. I've never used a respro mask and I'd be interested to hear from someone who has; but in my experience a dust mask needs a silicone seal or similar if it to be remotely useful. Something like this...
...looks extreme but I wear something similar regularly and they are quite comfortable since most of the mask is held off your face rather than having a bit of damp neoprene stuck against you. The resistance to breathing is small ie. not noticeable when not exercising.
