As an Asthmatic I know diesel fumes set off an attack in me. Even in the car if I'm following a smokey diesel I can feel my chest tighten within a few seconds. I now switch the ventilation system to recirculate whenever I see smoke from a vehicles exhaust.

There are a few chaps around our town that delight in their scrappage scheme dodging machines belching out thick black soot out of their rears. There's even a Xsara with a large rear window decal 'Choking cyclists since 2005'. I was never a fan of the oil burners, but now that i'm spending more time on the bike, I'm starting to detest them and their smell.

Respro make a big deal about their filter which is probably fine, but are pretty quiet on the importance of the mask making a good seal to your face. I've never used a respro mask and I'd be interested to hear from someone who has; but in my experience a dust mask needs a silicone seal or similar if it to be remotely useful. Something like this...

One of these should just about suffice if you're worried about particulates,

...looks extreme but I wear something similar regularly and they are quite comfortable since most of the mask is held off your face rather than having a bit of damp neoprene stuck against you. The resistance to breathing is small ie. not noticeable when not exercising.

Get the right filter in that mask, and you'll notice it. Moreso as it nears the end of its life, 50 hours use.

That can vary by several magnitudes dependent about what else it is in compound with. Cows tend not to guff laboratory grade purity of CH4.

There are all sorts of compounds with very high intensity, but they're not methane.
