How many trackpoints / location timings are they recording over the rides? Fewer trackpoints = lower average speed.
I found this to be the case, I used to do a ride which had lots of 90 degree bends in it, it was in the US where they like to block out the housing, when I compared the Garmin with the phone the Garmin had me going around all the bends, the phone had me going through some of the houses.

As to why I record a ride, I do find it interesting after the ride to see how far, how long, I do like to look at the sectors to see how I compare with before, although I don't worry or get upset if it's not faster etc.
