Disturbing phone call.

No one who is legit would ever phone and tell you to get your credit card ready. Never ever give your details to anyone either over the phone or via email. There is only 1 thing I pay over the phone and that's the bill for the service and MOT on my car. They drop my car off with the bill and I phone the garage the next day to pay for it.

I got one of those emails, you know the "we hid a virus on your phone and now have a video of you having a J. Arthur Rank to to porn" sorts. I knew it was rubbish bedause being a bit of an analogue kind of chap I use top shelf mags and not my phone. Anyway, I replied that I was going to track him down and give him the hiding of a lifetime and I've not had any more spam since then.

The blackmail scammers aren't interested in whether you reply to their emails or not, in fact they usually say in their original email that the address isn't monitored for replies.

All they care about is whether you feel guilty and are stupid enough to pay them money into their Bitcoin account.

Early this afternoon I received a call from a mobile number unknown to me. With a strong Scottish accent, this man said he had a High Court judgement against me for non payment of Google fees when I had my driving school. I never advertised with Google and I closed my school 8 years ago. I had a line on Facebook but that's all. He finished the call advising me to have my bank card ready.
My wife says it is a scam and so do our children. It has to be as I know I don't owe anybody anything, especially from 8 years ago.

When "HMRC" calls and tells you they are taking you to court for unpad tax, you can safely ignore that one too....

That is exactly the premise of the funniest cold-call wind up I have ever heard. It’s an old one but it’s never been bettered.

Yep, a scam. I get emails supposedly from Woolwich, Barclays, etc saying there's an issue with my non-existent bank account with them . Not had a phishing phone call yet, but I would have gritted your teeth and in your best Clint Eastwood voice say...Are you feeling lucky punk?...Go ahead, make my day.... Courts would, as far as I am aware, never call you up & ask for cash payment. You'd probably get a letter.

I have done away with my landline. I used it a lot for business but since I retired I found I was using it less and less and the calls that did come in were either old customers, recommends from old customers or scam calls. It was only connected in recent years to get the internet. Swapping over to a fibre connection I cancelled to line and saved 25 quid a month.
My mobile often warns me if it's a scam call or a potential threat which is handy. I still do get them but it's rare and I treat any call from a stranger with suspicion until I know otherwise.
Mind you I do get quite a few voice messages left in what sounds like Chinese.😕

I disabled the message facility on my answerphone landline. I used to work away from home lots and upon returning, umpteen calls when played back ..'the other person has cleared...'.I used to get those computer ones with a poorly patched together mp3 message...you know, those that go up & down in tone and you can spot from Jupiter are utter fakes. Trouble was, it triggered off the answerphone and I got fed up of sifting through loads of that.

In the past on my mobile, I've had pestering calls so once used ' Hello MI5...how did you get this classified number?. This is a restricted number sir. Our tracing software is running and will find you right away' and he hung up.

I never ever have volume on phone and don't answer numbers not in my contacts. Most of the time I'm on airplane mode. I don't get calls that way.

Isn’t something that doesn’t ring; and you don’t take calls on called a book ?

Although a letter through the door from the HMRC advising you they are trying to contact you via phone & email without success & to contact them might not be. I got one the other day ignored the number on the letter & rang one on the website. 3 phone calls 3 hours later with 3 different operators apparently the company books were filed late in 2008 & the company still owed them £100 in fees. Unfortunately (for them) just as I was about to ask for proof the line went dead for the 3rd time.

Probably the reason they couldn't contact by phone or email if they have tried is 2008 was the last trading year & the phone & email haven't worked since.

Watch your phone bill for cheeky charges on those calls.
