They can only really make roads safer if they stop other people doing stupid and dangerous things, which doesn't appear to be in evidence in many of the YouTube videos posted from helmet cams. Of course that isn't exclusive to cycling, motorcycle riders and vehicle drivers all use them too but it doesn't seem to stop idiots behaving like idiots regardless of their mode of transport. I guess you might avoid being assaulted by
Mr or Mrs Angry if you point out your camera and tell them you'll report them to the police, but as some videos have shown that doesn't always stop people either.
I think personality can make a difference. There are a few guys on my commute who are very aggressive cyclists and will do anything to avoid giving way, taking off even a fraction of speed, never mind stopping, and I regularly hear one guy shouting at drivers when he is clearly trying his absolute best to "own" the road and get ahead of everyone. Personally, I don't have such problems, and I don't suppose most people on CycleChat will either?
I can see their use in terms of someone crashing into you or causing you harm, but I don't think they teach people much of anything other than there are a whole range of nutters out there to avoid at all costs.
