An audax bike
A Time Trial / triathlon bike
A cyclocross bike

That'll do for starters

Audax - I don't think there's a deal of difference between the Kinesis / Kona and an audax bike. I intend to get into longer rides, so I'll keep my options open.
Time trial - no, I have no intention of racing of any type.
Cyclocross - Kinesis with different tyres?

A Brompton.
Oh, and aBrompton....

I've been 'building' a Brompton on their site for months. And lustfully looking at Rohloff and disc braked Bromptons on http://www.kinetics-online.co.uk/ for a long time...

Unless you race, you only need one bike. The best you can afford and when something needs replacing replace it with the best bit of kit you can afford rather than spreading your money over multiple machines. You might have half a dozen bikes in the garage but you can only ride one at a time, the rest are just taking up space.

The correct formula is; If n>1 then n-1 till n=1.

Yes, anyone only needs one bike, the same as anyone only needs one pair of shoes - you can only ride / wear one pair at a time. But it's nice to have different bikes / shoes for different occasions.

I'm obviously not alone on this forum in being in the fortunate position of being able to have more than one bike and what's "best" depends on all sorts of variables.

DCLane

The GF is a great all rounder and very comfortable for a longer ride and slapping a pair of clip ons turns it in to an OK TT bike but whilst its got clearance for the mud I doubt its got the stopping power for cyclocross, unless you've got the newer disc brake model :okay:
I would still get that fixie and head to the Vale of Belvoir, the Trent Valley is too flat ;)
