As per subject line really, is it common for people to change from club to club?

I joined a club 12 months ago and they are a really good club, quite small and very friendly.

My sole reason for joining is the sunday run and occasional TT. I'm not into racing.

I find on the club runs, numbers are quite low, and i tend to be one of the slow ones. Put into perspective i can average 15.5 to 16mph over an undulating 50 mile ride (say about 1000m of climbing) but this is low for most of the lads. Whilst i can keep up with the fast lads on the flat as soon as it heads uphil i'm going backwards fast. When there are a couple of other "slow" riders it's not too bad, but - on days like today - i was the only slow one out of a group of 10 and i struggled all the way round and came back knackered and a bit fed up.

Fair play to them, they kept waiting for me, but this must be a pain for them as it's embarrassing for me.

I can either stick with it and take the rough with the smooth as they are the local club, or i can try a few other clubs. Now i'm 42 and came to cycling a bit late in life so i suspect i'm not going to get any faster. There are a couple of clubs nearby who have 3 groups on a sunday and i suspect i'd get much more enjoyment out of a larger B group.

Might be a daft question, but i'm not sure if this is common practice. I come from a running background, and it was pretty unheard of in my area for people to change running clubs.

It's good that they waited for you, that shows it a good club. However if you are not happy and you do want to join another club. Then just do it or join both. There's no rules against being in 2 clubs.

A fair few riders in my club have moved to others, sometimes because other clubs have better coaching or are (even) more race-oriented, sometimes because they've moved further away. You can be in two clubs- I was, for a while, a second-claim member of another local club because they were part of a group that organized a series of 25s and a 50 mile TTs that I liked to take part in.

Other options are to stick at it- you'll get faster, or organize a slower club run- it could help for new members and those that want an easier sunday ride- might be more difficult with a small club though.

We have riders from other clubs on our rides most weeks, they are cyclists and all are welcome. We have one guy who has rode his bike and raced in almost every event for over 30 years whilst being a member of another club.
