My local shared use path is utterly brilliant. Here's the code of conduct, which is less so:

Just glanced at it. Seemed reasonable - did I miss something?

Shouldn't that be cyclists and horses on the left, peds on the right? Same reason it's peds on the right on a road, they can see you coming if they are facing you. It's still the cyclist's responsibility to go round them so it makes no difference to the peds, you just know they are less likely to not see you and decide to walk into your path as you are overtaking by mistake.

The code of conduct probably helps towards the brilliance of the shared path!

That's the kind of thing I think should be going into a locked thread with a helpful list of advice, hints and tips for users of shared paths without all the extra chat about people's experiences.

I actually find it's easier if everyone stays on the left. If you're coming up behind a pedestrian but there's also a cyclist approaching from the opposite direction, then you only have to slow down behind the pedestrian. If there's a cyclist approaching from the opposite direction and a pedestrian who is approaching on the left, then you and the pedestrian both have to stop.

@steveindenmark to be fair that lovely stretch of pristine and other people free tarmac bares absolutely no relation to most of them in the UK. I like being separated from HGVs myself and regularly use shared use paths to avoid them, not one of them has ever looked like that and I've had to put 25c marathon plus tyres on my new audux bike so I can ride on them.

I am sure you are right. This cycle path has not been touched in the last 12 years since I have been here and I didnt choose it for how nice it was. But it shows you what you can get when someone finds the correct strategy.
