Do you buy something cycling every month ?

Obviously there are purchases you look forward to wheel, bikes, clothes,

But I seem to have to buy something every month this months unexpected purchases:-

Cycling Cap
Knee Strap
Front Brake Caliper
Front brake cable

Last month from memory
Chain
Chain Degreaser

Thought this was supposed to be a cheap hobby - I can't seem to get through a month without buying something ......Can you ?

2016 my new year resolution was not to buy anything cycling related unless i really needed it.I got to June and saved quite a few quid then spent the lot and more on an ultegra group set

A month, maybe, but chains, cables, brake pads, tyres, tubes... they're consumables and they're all pretty cheap. I've just paid hundreds out for car parts alone and hang on a minute: hobby? Nah, it's transport and the low cost should be evaluated in that context ;)

Yep, consumables are not to be considered unexpected. I always keep a stash of brake pads, cables, bar tape, oil, degreaser, even wheel rims. I never throw tired or old components (not consumables) away, I'll refurbish them after fitting new stuff so I have a backup, or parts for a new build project. Buy parts, but especially consumables in the sales so you can cut costs, when you need them, they might not be so cheap.

As mrj says, it's all transportation cost (unless for some reason you are a wussy recreational cyclist) and riding costs fractions of a penny per mile over the lifetime of most components, with the caveat, if you skip over cleaning and maintenance and safe storage, it's going to cost you a lot more as parts age prematurely.

One way to keep costs down is it ride a simple bike. Fixed speed, and keep accessories to a minimum. Buy stuff used. Ride in normal clothing. Also, use what you have before replacing. Top end Ultegra replacement parts are going to cost a lot more than Tiagra, which is basically as good as the last generation Ultegra (in terms functionality, perhaps not weight).

Haven't bought anything for some time, I did get a wheel built earlier in the year. Unlikely I'll buy much this year, got some cables and brake pads in stock, plenty other spares.

Might need some tyres at some point, but I've decided to try and get more life out of 'em being as I'm very lucky puncture-wise, I absolutely believe this is an enduring trait that I possess and tyres have little to do with it.

I've started this year to try and keep track of my spending and from memory totted up what I've spent over the last few years on everything from bikes, clothing, tools, sportives etc

2015 - £1000
2016 - £1500
2017 - £400

I'm hoping to keep the spending down this year as I feel a new bike coming in 2018.

Apart from MBR magazine, which is getting cancelled soon, I'm not spending much. But then I do have a fork service to get done, maybe new brake pads, shoes are looking a bit worn, a new cool weather top would help, got to get some cycling glasses, err what else? .... hmmm ...

It's not properly cheap. It's relatively cheap ( compared to a similarly involved automotive interest), however, as with all things, manufacturers will make unnecessarily complicated ( ergo expensive) bits, for anyone who wants them. I'm forever finding new bike bits / upgrades to buy. I actually like that though. Last week I both bought upgrades, and then rode up grades, I should have thought a bit more about the wisdom of fitting a 53 tooth big ring, then going up the steepest and longest climbs in my locale, however . If it gets too much, there's always fishing, I suppose:okay:.

My expenditure so far this year stands around £400.

I have just got a new bike on C2W after writing off my other one in a freak accident. Snapped non drive side drop out after clipping something on way into work.

After taking advantage of the genuine sale prices and the associated tax savings and BC discount I have saved more than the cost of the voucher. I am pretty much set for the year apart from disc pads and bar tape consumables which will be covered by the strip down of the broken frame.
