Me? I will ride the pavement when the road is not suitable to my skill level, I'm still learning.

From looking at most of the previous replies, I think they would prefer you in a coffin than on the pavement.

As long as they are going slowly and it isn't busy I don't see what the problem is.

Don't let them get to you WeeE, just progress at what rate you feel comfortable with and ride where you like, just don't squish anyone with your bike

Magnatom, I think you miss the point, I agree about cycle lanes/shared paths joining the main flow of the road. I agree if someone decided to whizz across a crossing from pavement to pavement. As I said, if you are careful, and actually stop and look both ways when crossing, effectively acting as a pedestrian just with two wheels and being considerate and aware of your surroundings.

It's not all black and white - not all on a bike on the pavement are the frog like mobile phone wielding teenagers who don't give a damn - it's someone who wants to go somewhere.

I know that with proper training and awareness of the road etc is the way to be - it's much faster for a start, but you can't force it on people who just aren't ready - training and experience take time to build up.

Abusing them with 'witty' comments is the same as a car driver giving you abuse from his window, it's people like that that need to grow up, not the pavement cyclist IMO.

The point I was making is that when you see someone on the pavement, you really don't know why they are on that bit of pavement.

It may be because they feel it's the safest way of negotiating some particular traffic point that's not on your route - or they may have come off a road at a sensible point and have a couple of hundred yards to get to their destination. You usually can't tell why someone's cycling on the pavement, or for what distance, unless you talk to them.

In fact, mangatom, I live in Govan where I'm sure you know the roads are magnificently potholed and metal-strewn, and a good proportion of the motorists we get coming through are nutters - attracted by the quiet roads, ironically enough. I'm a female, and haven't yet been shouted at by any cyclist, but if you shout at me without at least stopping to ask why I'm doing whatever I'm doing, you'll get it back by the govan shipload, mate.

I've been doing the opposite - telling (student) pedestrians to get on the pavement. They're more dangerous to me than cars at the moment.

I won't use most of the cycle lanes herabouts on principle, as they are ill thought-out, ill-maintained piles of poo which are more of a hazard than the roads are. There are a few exceptions in Peterborough itself but they are a very few.
Magnatom, I like the erudite and witty way the chap in your clip puts his case forward for riding on the path

I should point out that that witty comment (the video) was about 3 years ago. I've mellowed since then. However, that guy was a bit of a numpty!

I certainly don't make comments to everyone I see pavement cycling. If I see someone pootling along who is obviously taking it slowly and looking a bit nervous I will leave them be. What I hate are the idiots (like this mornings) who know what they are doing, and are going at a fair rate.

Also when I do make comments now, I generally just point out, 'do you know you can get fined for that?'. Not everyone knows that. One chap, who turned out to be American actually thanked me for pointing it out, as he though he wasn't allowed on some roads.

I'm going to making comments to ever female cyclist I see in Govan now just to see if I can find you and get the reaction...:biggrin:

As I said above, I don't say anything the vast majority of the time.

In some US states, cyclists aren't allowed on many roads.

Aye, he mentioned that when we had a chat. Nice chap as it happens.

 You probably won't survive long enough to meet me, then!

(Actually, if you come off your commute-route and cycle around south of the river here, the first thing you'll notice is that there aren't many female cyclists.) (not over the age of 10, anyway)

Och, Govan isn't that bad. There are much worse areas in Glasgow than Govan!

I wasn't having a direct go at you (didn't mean to anyway) as I havn't watched it yet with sound. And I certainly don't mind constructive criticism. I just don't like the blanket attitude applied to people who happen (rightly or wrongly) to be on a pavement, as WeeE says only they know why they are there.

What do you mean "worse than"? Govan's a perfectly good place, except for its crappy road surfaces: it just doesn't contain the type of woman to take comments by passing cyclists lying down;)!

Don't worry, if there is something I've learned over the last few years, it's not to take comments personally!
