Seven miles each way, rarely extend, it does me, usually want to get to work or get home for my tea !

I think 7 or 8 miles, anything up to 10 would suit me fine.

My current commute is a 32 mile round trip and it's hilly. It's just too much for me to do everyday (at the moment anyway.)

Mine's long enough - around 10 miles each way, although I admit I often stop by somewhere (and no, it doesn't always involve clothes shopping) en route, so it's usually a bit longer. I wouldn't want it to be shorter, though.

Absolutely my commute is 3 miles each way and its just not long enough trouble is the scenery in East London is not that great and im limited on routes to extend, I do however take the longest route possible which involves some nice hill climbs which they used for the recent London triathlon, which on a windy day leaves me dripping by the time I get in.

Mine is none existent at the moment, but next month I will be starting a new part time job and doing a 36 mile round trip once or twice a week. If it gets particularly bad in the depths of winter I have the option of cycling to the station a mile away and getting the train! I can't see that I'll be extending the ride at all (at least not at first - the distance is fine for me when touring or just out for a fun ride, but I've never been a regular commuter, so it'll be fun to see how it all turns out!)

I do 5 miles each way but if it is nice weather, I can string that out for another 4 - quieter roads, better scenery and less of an incline that way too.
Unfortunately I rarely do the extra more than a handful of times a month due to that 'bad day, get home asap' feeling while still at work.

:smile:I live 100yds form the railway station and work less than a mile form the station at the other end. However, on my return commute, I get off at either Linlithgow (17miles) or Polmont (22miles) and then often add little loops depending on how I feel.

Apologies if this has been posted already.

I find myself wishing I had a longer commute, as it's only 3.5 miles each way.
(probably won't be thinking the same in the depths of winter)

Does anyone have a short commute, but makes it longer on purpose?

Oh yes. My direct route to work is also 3.5miles. Most days I do 21 there and 9 back. Somedays I'll let myself off and do 15 there. If I'm in a hurry I might just do the 9 miles there to. If its been a bad day or I'm needed at home I might cycle back the 3.5 miles.

As the winter comes in I'll probably drop the 21 in the mornings and just do the 15 + 9 most days.

My shortest possible route is 6 miles. I never ride thet route, unless I am really pushed for time. My normal route is 11 miles, I just head out West from work, swing a loop South then head East. This is often (like 4 days this week) ended up being a 30 mile round trip.

So, extend your route - pick some good roads and loop round rather than going straight there. Sometimes a longer route can be better - less traffic, easier flowing.

You can always ride the short route if it's chucking it down.

My basic principle is to cycle away from work, then what ever happens getting work is further than 3.5, which at 12 mins is not really envigourating enough, even is its lashing down.

My commute used to be 18 miles each way but it was interesting because i could use the canal towpath for most of it.I have now mover nearer and it has reduced to 6 miles each way but is not the best ride due to just going through housing estates and riding on rubbish roads so i am glad it is shorter for the bordom factor alone......i do make up for it at weekend if i have time though !

LOL! I could do with a shorter commute, although I'm feeling fairly recovered today (rest day for me). Just had a nice afternoon nap and the baby didn't even wake me up.

How many miles is your commute one way BM?
