I do the short route, 3.5 miles, in really bad weather or when I've been a bit under the weather. Otherwise the commute gets stretched by various detours.

Yep, Direct commute is 2.7 miles, managed 80 this week extending it here and there. Shortest ride was just over three but I did stop and play 5 a side for an hour before coming home.

It's sometimes too easy to be lazy and take the direct ride home or lay in bed longer in the morning so a longer commute would remove this option for me.

Yes I would prefer a longer commute. Mine is 2.9miles each way (3.1 if you include the car park). Maybe im lazy, but I dont want to add extra loops to make up the distance. I like to travel direct.

Its ok. I make up the lack of miles by going on non-essential rides. That way I dont feel the need to push too hard on the commutes. I can push it on the leisure rides instead.

Today's stats :
First commute = 3.07
Warmup = ~3
Race = 8.05
Second commute = 2.95
Total = 17.07 miles. Not too bad I think.

Mmm dunno about getting a longer one myself (phanr phanr)...

Thing is I wonder if it is possible to do a 62 mile commute everyday?

I have made my mind up that at the moment it's just on the verge of too much is 62 miles a day with my level of fitness, yesterday on the way home (around 20 odd miles in) I was having to dig deep to keep going and that was after some decent food during the day.

I can manage the 46 miles a day route comfortably as it misses out the masses of hills in the first few miles from my doorstep.

When I first started cycling in April I thought my 18.5 mile round trip was going to be too far to do more than a couple of times a week,now I do all week and sometimes a few weekend miles as well.
Think it is a perfect distance now.

What I find rather impressive is peeps like you and Hackers riding 5 and more days in a row.

I'm a bit of a lightweight that way, as I do the weekend and tues/weds/thurs, so I get Mondays and Fridays to rest and recover.

Ditto, that's almost always my routine to.

I generally take the motorbike in on Monday and Friday, but I dont do any riding at the weekend other than family rides around bedgeberry (or suchlike) on the very odd occasion, so I generally run in on Tue/Wed/Thurs myself.

That said, that racks up a fair amount of miles in a week (enough for me as a beginner)

My commute is exactly the same as the OP, 3.5 miles each way but I extend it to 5 miles each way usually and longer on the odd occasion. The limiting factor for me is time, in the morning I usually have work I need to get on with and in the evening I want to get home to see the sprog. Having said that, if I lived further away and had to commute a greater distance, I would, so is it just laziness on my part that I don't do a 20mile per day commute?!
