The problem is that she and the "relationship" between her and the Doctor seem to have become the key part of many stories. Not sure if it started with David Tennant's Dr Who, but up until then there never seemed to be any underlying hints of repressed romantic relationships between the Dr and his companions. This is a sci-fi series and should be about aliens, fighting and killing and not about soppy feelings.
Which raises the question, with all the hints of romance... will the Dr ever have a sole male companion?

Father Jack or Father Dougal but not Father Ted. Father Ted simply hasn't got the range of emotions needed for a Doctor Who characterization.
Being dead doesn't help.

They should dump Dr Who and concentrate on the utterly magnificent Michelle Gomez.

I lost the will during Tennant era, I really liked Christopher Eccleatone's interpretation and all the people saying it has slipped. It did when Rusaelw T Davies stepped aside and let Stephen Moffat take over, it has got sillier and more repetitive since.

The best suggestion for the next Dr has already been used in the wrong role:John Simm.

I find the scripts beyond sense now a days, although perhaps I am just being more critical. I dislike Capaldi - all the shouting and guitar playing annoys me. I also agree that the "romantic" relationships have gone a bit far. It was superb, in my opinioion, between Tennant and Rose, but since then the writers seem to have decided that the Dr must always have a secret yearning for the assistant and it has all gone to pot - although Amy and Rory were rather sweet, especially the "Eternal Centurian"

I realise I am rambling somewhat, but in answer to the original question I think Jim Carter (the butler from Downton Abbey) would be superb

I'm enjoying Capaldi's tenure as the Doctor and glad he killed the assistant-as-potential-girlfriend in his first episode with 'I'm not your boyfriend'. He brings a certain gravitas of an older actor to the role but is just as mad as all the other Doctors. He can also play the electric guitar:okay:. He gets some great lines like 'I'm old enough to be your messiah!'. I am enjoying the current series and it's 'easter egg' references to the Dr Who of old.

The main problem with Moffat's stories is... the Doctor seems to be increasingly using time travel as a way to solve the problem. I know this is obvious since he is a time lord... but it never used to be as simple as "oh i just went back in time and changed things" ...it's just lazy writing and that's what really let down the underwater ghosts story.
