Does a left on kettle still burn power and if so how much?

You are over-thinking this (or perhaps under-thinking it) ... Just keep the kettle well away from the base/stand until you actually want to boil some water! :okay:
That's OK until you splash water on the open base and it goes bang, isn't it?

I remember my dad who was supposed to be a stickler for saving money, had a bad habit of filling and boiling a kettle just to make one cup of tea or coffee. Then he'd just leave the remaining water(about 1 litre) to cool off. That was a waste to me,so that's why i developed the waste not want not, pour it down the sink to get rid of grease etc habit.
Your dad wasn't as wasteful as you think: that litre of water was heating the room a bit, especially in an old kettle which was less insulated.

Pouring just-boiled water down the sink is not getting rid of grease - that's just moving it down the pipes a bit to join the clog wherever the water/grease cools. If you're on an independent tank, that's costing you money directly - if you're on mains sewerage, then it's costing everyone in your area money and risking blocking your neighbours' drains. It's rather anti-social. Don't put fats/oils/grease down the sink - either store it and pour it into a recycler (if there's one nearby or you use a lot) or mix it with coffee grounds until it's sludge and put that in the food waste collection.
I've got my eye on this. https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/1825209241...=9046650&device=c&campaignid=707291931&crdt=0
It seems too good to be true. What do you lot think?
Looks like ones Wilkinsons were selling before last Christmas - possibly remaindered stock?

Edit: I take it back after seeing @roadrash's post. I looked quickly and saw £12 and had forgotten that the price changes as you change the listbox. I've been annoyed by that on ebay before, where a seller puts one cheap item in to get listed at 99p when what you want is £5 more than less devious sellers list it for.

I don't recommend trying to use a kettle to insulate live electrical connections from randomly spilt water! I think a more sensible approach is to have the kettle base a good distance from any source of water. Mine is 4 feet away from the kitchen sink and I stand in that gap between the taps and the kettle base when turning taps on, doing the washing up and so on.

Well yes, but freak events occur. I've even once upended a glass of wine over the worktop

Surely the kettle is the only thing usually insulating the live connections from the water? I suspect they're designed to have the kettle on them except when filling.

If the kettle is prone to being left on accidentally, I'd either get a better kettle or put it on a countdown timer socket to limit the damage.

I've always emptied the unwanted boiled water down the sink,as i think it's useful for getting rid of any grease lurking down the plughole. I'm going to try and get out the habit and keep the water in the kettle. Though i never fill the kettle to the top like he did. I always try to judge the right amount. When i say i pour the unwanted water down the sink,it only amounts to about half a cup.
If you're on a water meter, just think how much money you're pouring down the plughole!
