I cycle "little and often" to get to work, the shops etc and I just wear normal clothes.

However I have noticed that the bum area of all my trousers is getting significantly paler than the rest of the trousers due to wear! This is especially in problem in trousers, rather than jeans, but is noticeable on my jeans as well.. I'm quite annoyed as none of my trousers are remotely old and I don't want to replace them, but I guess in the near future I will have to, only for the same problem to occur, and then I'll have to replace them again...and the cycle (haha see what I did there? ) continues

Is this a common problem in cyclists, to go through trousers very quickly?

I have long lost the flexibility required to look down there and have never seen that on anyone else either. Is your saddle perhaps to blame? Perhaps it has a suede or similar covering that rubs the pants up the wrong way? Surely a smooth plastic/vinyl saddle won't do that? Or do I simply not understand cycling in Saville Row's finest?

Varies a bit, but a lot of smarter trousers now seem unable to cope with walking or cycling. Usually, the seat goes shiny first and the tops of the backs of the thighs crease oddly (from the pedalling action), but I had a pair from Burtons's which lasted just two days of short rides to/from a work site before they started pilling around the ankle cuff.

Walking, workwear or specialist smart-cycling trousers seem to last better, but aren't smart enough for everywhere IMO.

It seems to happen across saddle types, shapes and materials, so I suspect it's a consequence of the flexing of the pedalling action and many trousers not being cut to facilitate that sort of activity any more.

I suspect Saville Row's finest might well withstand it better than typical cotton or fine polycotton weaves used on the High Street at the minute, as their methods have probably change less in attempt to make stuff ever cheaper and their clients probably grumble more if stuff doesn't withstand what they consider ordinary use.

They are just ordinary trousers from GAP and the like, normal saddle too.

They seem to go shiny and pale on the arse area.

TBH that was the reason I started wearing 'cycle specific' (OK Lycra) trousers 20yrs ago, no sooner after a pair of jeans get to 'looking right' than I'd worn through the bum. :cursing:

Kumquat. I sympathise. But dtop moaning.

When you do the miles I ride, stopping your arxe wearing out is the problem.

At this time of year some overtrousers would maybe help you.

lol i tend to wear out jeans etc at the back of the lower leg not by cycling but by hack squats when i can not get out on a bike, way i look at it is the more you wear out trousers etc though exercise then the better of you are for it.

I buy three pairs of suit trousers for each suit jacket. Worn through at the crotch every time, which I kind of treat as a badge of honour.

Aye, it's a big problem with trousers/jeans. (I cycle a lot wearing normal clothes due to my work and not wanting to wear lycra on anight out) I've worked out that it's worth spending more on stuff designed for cycling in.

For example swrve or , god help me, rapha do jeans and trousers.

You do pay a premium but the harder wearing and quicker drying materials used along with subtle differences in their cut make them decent value in the end and nice to cycle in.

A bit of polyester in the mix can add durability. Try polycotton or wool polyester mix. I used to get about 2 years out of a pair of cargo style troosers with daily riding. I buy more now and rotate usage.
