Does anyone use a GPS/Smartwatch for cycling and running?

My garmin edge touring plus seems to spend a lot of time attached to my partners bike, I was considering buying another for him (or he can keep the old one lol!) but then had a thought at our local running club after seeing lots of people using garmin/polar watches etc. I normally use strava on my phone for running but its an iPhone 6plus so not ideal, also it would be nice to be able to glance at it whilst running as I do the garmin for cycling rather than just seeing your stats at the end.

Does anyone use a watch for both? I'm wondering if I splash out on a watch will it really be good for cycling or will I regret not getting another handlebar mounted option?

I use strava to record run and cycle data so must be compatible with this, any recommendations on models? Or ones to avoid lol!

Not as yet, but i'd like one. I keep watching the CES headlines about Smart Watch releases. Some have GPS built in and other need to tether to a phone. I just use an old Android phone at present with Strava. A lot of my colleagues think that Smart Watches are a waste of time (excuse the pun), truth is, they (apple, Samsung etc) shifted 91.5 million smart watches / smart bands in 2015.

I just got a Garmin Forerunner 220 for running after getting annoyed with the phone in an armband. No dedicated option for cycling on it though so the activity has to be changed on Strava/Garmin connect from run to cycle, other more expensive models had cycle mode. Battery life would need to be considered when using for cycling or a fresh charge would be required before every outing. I liked having my phone in a back jersey pocket on cycles though as I often required Google maps .

I'm just about to push the button on buying a TomTom Multi Sports cardio. it seems to cover cycling better than the Garmin's I've seen and gets better reviews than the Fitbit Surge.

I have used (still use on MTB) a Garmin 410 for running & cycling its compatable with speed cadence sensor if needed, not as good as the Garmin 500 I use for all my road biking but perfectly OK if you want just the one device, the 410 is a fairly old model, I am not sure of the latest models from Garmin but there will be one that fits your needs, be sure to get the rubber handlebar mount if you get one, no need to zip tie it on as suggested, just tighten the strap and away you go.

I've been using one for the past two months and it's not let me down yet. It can track running, swimming, cycling, treadmill, turbo and is small/light enough to still be worn as a normal watch.
I still use my trusty Edge 200 for breadcrumb navigation on the bike though.

I have a TomTom Multisport. It is ok but a bit buggy. I still use it for swimming and running, but switch to a Garmin 520 for cycling.

Thanks all for the advice, will keep looking the different models up! I'm not interested in tracking my sleep or mountaineering etc, just want speed and distance/route mainly - I did see a tom-tom one that had a HRM in the wriststrap and stored music you could access with bluetooth headphones which sounded nice - bit superfluous though!

I've just got the Garmin Vivoactive and can't fault it. I read on a review that you can cheaply get a bar attachment for a watch as well. You can just ignore the sleep tracking, golf and swimming etc.

Hi, I use a Polar M400 for both running and cycling. It has GPS tracking and uses polar flow web application that syncs your training run or ride. You can export and then import into Strava.

I've used a Garmin FR60, FR310XT and Suunto Ambit 3S for Running, Cycling (and Swimming) - Garmin used to make their running watches with a cycling mode, but have gradually stopped doing this to push people to their triathlon watches. Places like www.handtec.co.uk have a selection of older models that may have cycling modes.

The only thing to be aware of is that the screens are much smaller than a dedicated Garmin Edge - your best bet may be to pick up a bottom end Garmin Edgeor similar from about £60-70 and a running watch as well....
