Good luck FF, not an easy thing. I too would recommend a small mongrel, wander round the rescue centers and see what would suit.
Greyhounds have an awesome reputation as the perfect family pet, and they're rumored to not take up much space for their size but it sounds as if one would still be just too big for your requirements.
We have a little rescue Rottie, and I have to admit the amount of car space she takes up is staggering. We also camp very frequently, albeit in a caravan (most weekends in the Summer) so have to carry far less clutter than we would in a tent but even then it gets difficult and we have a huge 4X4 to try and fit everything into.
Good luck, dogs are fantastic company as you well know
(conveniently ignores the fact that our little rescue has totted up well over £1000.00 in vets bills in the 4 Months we've had her...)
