Good luck FF, not an easy thing. I too would recommend a small mongrel, wander round the rescue centers and see what would suit.
Greyhounds have an awesome reputation as the perfect family pet, and they're rumored to not take up much space for their size but it sounds as if one would still be just too big for your requirements.

We have a little rescue Rottie, and I have to admit the amount of car space she takes up is staggering. We also camp very frequently, albeit in a caravan (most weekends in the Summer) so have to carry far less clutter than we would in a tent but even then it gets difficult and we have a huge 4X4 to try and fit everything into.

Good luck, dogs are fantastic company as you well know

(conveniently ignores the fact that our little rescue has totted up well over £1000.00 in vets bills in the 4 Months we've had her...)

There is always the scaled down version, the whippet.

Whippies do need a little more exercise though, the roaching bone bag in my pic folds up into approx 18" Sq or at least he does when that is the only space left on the sofa, bugger as a boney arse though so soon manages to expand

Whippets are a possibility, Mrs FF's cousin has 2 and they're sweet, and a pal has a whippet cross. They just don't seem to cuddlesome being all muscle and bones!

Best dog I've known was a female wire-haired fox terrier- quick, bright and friendly... my dad had several male Jack Russells- his were unpleasant yappy vermin who he couldn't prevent attacking other dogs. Brother-in-l's male black Labrador is aggressive and sheds hair constantly. Aunt's had many Alsatians- some good, some awful.

Cousin has a labrador cross which doesn't moult and is very amenable- trains well.

Problem dogs are usually the product of problem owners... some people are emotional cripples, it must need a lot of work to re-train some rescue dogs' problems as a result... with the nagging feeling that some are irredeemable.

Ah but can you deny the logic of anything I have said and form coherent and logical arguements against born not out of your liking for dogs but out of facts which can refute what I've said.

It's easy to refute what you've said, it just isn't worth the effort.

The OP asks about a suitable breed of dog - not the merits of owning one or not.

Let's not ruin this thread with arguments please.

If one or more of you want to start a thread about pet ownership and the positives and negatives, pop over to the Debates forum!!

Thanks,
Shaun

Well I wasnt going to but since someone else has jumped in I'd like to remind FF that quite a few people cant stand mutts and when pestered by the fugging things, entertain thoughts of machine gunning all pet dogs and their idiot, emotionally retarded owners in a pit.

I'm much the same with cats ... others are like it with Children, C'est la vie.

Gary not only doesn't like dogs but cats as well. He also never wanted children. Now he's got a cat and a child, a dog is surely next

Joking aside, we seem to be homing-in on whippets, they tick pretty much all the boxes. Gonna make some enquiries with the breed club in the morning....

Why anyone would want a Jack Russell is beyond me. I worked as a Dog Handler for seven years in a section with 10 GSDs and handlers and never once got bitten even when exercising other handler's dogs. I have worked door to door for the same length of time now and have suffered many a nipped ankle from those little rug rats, they have a real aggressive small man attitude. I have never done more than enough to fend the little bastards off but the temptation to use one as a football is sometimes overwhelming.

I like JRTs precisely because they're hard as nails spunky little bastards that take no sh1t from no-one and they're very loyal companions.
