Dog flatulence

Can someone please explain why dog's have such nausea inducing flatulence and whether there is a way to cure it.



I have a very windy labrador and we are rapidly getting to the point where I may need to seal him up with a tapered cork. The wife isn't keen on this idea as she is scared he may inadvertantly shoot one of us with it as the pressure builds.

Meat heavy diet causing the smell????, I've no idea really, but we have to buy our smelly mutt charcoal biscuits from the pet food isle in Tesco's.....dried food helps with the smell too I think

Labradors are canine dustbins and unfortunately will eat anything and everything. Live with it, or restrict his diet to food with a lower fat content - do you feed him wet or dry food? Our Staffie absolutely reeks if we feed him wet food, but is liveable if we use dry, so guess what he gets? BTW, can your Lab play tunes if he farts when sitting down? Add oak floors, and a windy Staffie to get an amusing musical interlude. Just don't breathe in. Or light matches.

I've never known a dog fart so much as my Dogue de Bordeaux, we hear her fart from downstairs while she's upstairs. And she always does it when other people are visiting.

my boxer, my he rest in peace in doggy heaven, was the stinkiest dog. so much more so than the german shepherd (may he rest in peace in doggy heaven too) we had before him but there were reasons...the german shepherd had the most sensitive tummy, ever. if he got his paws on anything that wasn't dry food, he'd have the squitz for days. so he was kept to dry food and didn't smell.
the boxer however, could handle anything and because we'd had to be so regimented and careful with the previous dog, he got practically the same food we did...and boy oh boy did he let us know about it. he could make your eyes water and if he decided to let rip while sitting on you, he wouldn't move, just look round as if you'd done it and then start a scrap with you when you tried to move him off your lap - this was never easy cos he was strong as an ox...i miss him both lived to old age, is should add. the G/S got to 12 years old before his hips went and the boxer literally died of old age, also 12 years old, while out on a walk with my dad.

Try other foods. Cat farts aren't funny, fortunately they are few and far between.

Just out of interest, what are you feeding your dog? Some foods are more fart inducing than others. Our lot are on Greyhound Museli and they are not too windy.

Our Lab (may she RIP) could strip paint at twenty yards.
I've never known such a horrific smell.
It wasn't helped by her liking for eating any old rubbish she found on a walk...

Our Olly, Springer Spaniel, squeaky farts every time he runs up the stairs or jumps up on the sofa. I think dry food helps

I think the cork idea is a good one. Wear face visors or goggles to protect your eyes tho'

He's already on dry food so that idea has already been explored.


Looks like the cork is our only remaining course of action now, I'll just get the marigolds! How far in do you think it needs to be?

Try mixing the dried food with some of the supermarket own brand natural yoghurt. We'd use half a big pot per meal for a big dog and it did wonders for her.
Missing a day or two didn't do much harm but it was a fairly regular thing and pretty cheap too.

My lab eats dry food - occasionally drops the odd stinky one but for most of the time you wouldn't notice!
